Current UK travel advice is especially important here. It currently exempts Bahariya, Farafra, the White Desert and Black Desert from the broader Western Desert warning, but specifies particular approved corridors and says tourists entering Bahariya, Farafra, White Desert and Black Desert areas must arrange permits in advance and use an official guide.
That is why this guide focuses on practical organized routes, not simply the shortest line Google Maps can draw across Egypt.
